What we do

Tight Access Excavation

A large share of our excavation work is tight-access excavation — sites reached through a narrow side gate, a tight driveway, or a backyard with limited clearance around fences, pools or existing structures. Rather than turning these jobs away or bringing in oversized equipment that can't fit, we use compact machinery sized to the access available, including a Toro TX1000 narrow-track machine and a Dingo.

This lets excavation, site clearing and ground preparation happen in backyards and side-access sites that standard-sized excavators simply can't reach. Every tight-access job is different — the complete access path, not just the narrowest gate, determines what machine can be used and how the job is planned.

Backyard & Residential Excavation

We carry out backyard and residential excavation for landscaping projects, drainage work, garden bed preparation and general site reshaping — from small-scale digging for a garden bed or path through to larger excavation for levelling a sloped backyard.

Site Clearing & Preparation

Before a landscaping, driveway or retaining wall project begins, the site often needs clearing — removing existing turf, garden beds, paving or other material — and levelling before the new work starts. We carry out this clearing and preparation as the first stage of the project.

What's included

Excavation for Retaining Walls

Retaining wall construction depends on the excavation done beforehand — cutting back the existing ground to the correct line and depth, and preparing a base the wall can be built on. We carry out this excavation as part of a retaining wall project; see our Retaining Walls page for the wall construction itself.

Driveway Excavation & Ground Preparation

New driveways and driveway repairs generally start with excavation — removing existing material, cutting the driveway to the right level and preparing a stable base before any surface is laid. We carry out this excavation and preparation as part of a driveway project; see our Driveways page for the surface options themselves.

Landscaping & Turf Preparation

Turf, artificial turf and new garden layouts need the ground properly excavated and prepared first — cutting to level, removing unsuitable material and preparing a base the turf or garden bed can be built on. This preparation work is carried out as part of a landscaping project; see our Landscaping page.

Garden Beds, Shrubs & Small Tree Excavation

Smaller excavation jobs — digging out an area for a new garden bed, removing an old shrub or small tree and its root ball, or reshaping a section of garden — are also part of our excavation work, usually carried out with the Dingo or 1.7-tonne excavator depending on the site.

Our Excavation Equipment

Our excavation work is carried out using a Toro TX1000 narrow-track machine, a Dingo, and a 1.7-tonne excavator, chosen depending on the site and the access available. This is deliberately compact, site-suited machinery rather than large-scale earthmoving equipment — we're not positioned as a major civil excavation contractor, and the equipment reflects that.

Choosing and cost

How Much Access Is Needed?

Access requirements depend on which machine a job needs. Some jobs can be completed through an opening of around 900mm, depending on the machine being used, the complete access path from the street or driveway to the work area, ground conditions and the scope of the job.

This isn't a guarantee that every machine or every job will fit through a 900mm gap — access needs to be assessed for the specific site, which is why photos and measurements of the whole access path, not just the narrowest point, are useful when requesting an estimate.

What Affects an Excavation Estimate?

Excavation pricing depends on the amount of material to be moved, ground conditions, how much access the site allows (and therefore which machine is needed), whether material needs to be removed from site, and how the excavation connects to other work such as a retaining wall, driveway or landscaping project.

Excavation usually needs a quick site visit to confirm the quote. Photos and measurements help us plan it.

Frequently asked questions

What is tight-access excavation?

Excavation work carried out on sites with restricted space — for example a narrow side gate or limited driveway clearance — using compact machinery such as a Toro TX1000 narrow-track machine or a Dingo instead of standard-sized equipment.

What machinery does Regan's use?

A Toro TX1000 narrow-track machine, a Dingo, and a 1.7-tonne excavator, chosen depending on the site and access available.

How much access may be needed?

Some jobs can be completed through an opening of around 900mm, depending on the machine, the complete access path, ground conditions and job scope. This isn't a guarantee every machine or job will fit — access needs assessing for the specific site.

Can excavation form part of a driveway or retaining-wall project?

Yes. Excavation and ground preparation are a core part of most driveway and retaining wall projects, and we carry this out as part of the same job rather than as a separate contractor.
